Ryazan’s cats

Traditional Russian nalichnik

It’s an interesting feature of modern window frames’ manufacturer.
Let’s look at this old nalichniki, probably have been made in XIX century. If you see it doesn’t have much paint on it (we don’t know why, perhaps people wanted to save money or have some other reason) but the top of frame is rounded.
Now people use so many colours but don’t make rounded window frame.
At summer time a collect nalichniki for some folk park. The most complicated one cost at about 70000 rubles, but masters try to avoid making one with rounded top. I guess in the past it wasn’t a problem for master to make nalichnik like this.

PS enjoy Ryazan’s cats :)

The time when you can buy a house by parts

design for an old wooden building

Everyone travelling along the highways of Russia can see the frameworks of the wooden houses put on sale. One just is to approach, select the one he/she likes best, and they sell for you and even assemble if you like. Curious things is the same practice had existed as long back as 400 years ago  – foreign travelers mention Moscow market nicknamed The Skorodom(quickly-built house) where they offered parts of the houses which needed just one person to make a house of them!

What an old photo wouldn’t show you

Painted parts of wooden window frames

Most of books on wooden architecture published in the Soviet period are supplied with photos and, sometimes, with schematic patterns. And yes, most of the photos are black-and-white.

Of course it is a certain thing that B&W gives the best light-and-shade, that is, the best idea of the wood texture. Yet they might lead to conclusion that the houses were of that dull «wooden» color, ash-black and not painted at all.

Though the photograph from the book on the wooden architecture of the Gorkovskaya (now Nizhegorodskaya) Oblast published in 1955, tells us it was not always the case. Just imagine a house with all its carved parts painted!

A good news

A carved wooden house

I feel sorry if I don’t have enough time to post one more photo with a wooden house or a nalichniki. Even though I’d a reason why I couldn’t do it, I have a hard feeling. Cause I promised to myself to post, at list one time in a day, one photo with something interesting.
Now I present several news for you:)
First of all is a beatiful wooden house in Cherepovets city. I was surprised that almost all houses in a town were made from stone and only three-four from wood. This one survived because it was a house of USSR’s hero Ochelenkov Vladimir Nikolaevich.
The second news came from Vologda city, where was organised drive to raise funds to save Shahov’s house. 50 % of money was donated and it means that money will go to repair of this house. If you want to help you can go to this link
The third news is that Afisha.ru posted an interview with me about craucrowdfunding:) link

When you read about how in the autumn of 1941 Naro-Fominsk was first bombed and then passed from power between Soviet and Nazi troops, any hope that anything of these significant wooden buildings would survive melts instantly.
