Photo Usage Rules

This is an English translation provided for convenience. In the event of any discrepancy between this text and the Russian original, the Russian version shall prevail.

This document explains what you may and may not do with photographs from the Nalichniki.com archive — how to view, quote, and link to them lawfully, and in which cases separate permission is required.

These rules apply to all photographs in the Nalichniki.com photo archive, regardless of who the author is.

This document supplements Section 6, "Use of Materials by Other Users," of the User Agreement and does not replace it.

1. Why These Rules Exist

Nalichniki.com is not a commercial photo bank and not an open source of images for free distribution. The archive's purpose is to make it possible to examine details of carving and wooden architecture that are otherwise hard to see, and to preserve a photographic record of houses for history.

Some exact addresses on the site are deliberately hidden or shown only approximately, so as not to make it easier for vandals and hunters of carved details to locate specific houses. For the same reason, the archive does not aim to have its photographs spread widely across other sites without control over the source: fewer uncontrolled copies make it easier, if needed, to correct or remove information that could put a house or its residents at risk.

2. Who Holds the Rights

Copyright in each photograph belongs to its author, regardless of the fact that the photograph is published on Nalichniki.com. By uploading a photograph to the site, the author grants the archive only a permission to use it within the operation of the project (see Section 5 of the User Agreement for details), not a transfer of rights to the site or to third parties.

This means that using a photograph without permission infringes the rights not of the site, but of a specific person — the photograph's author.

3. What's Allowed Without Permission

The following is permitted without separate permission:

• viewing and studying photographs on the site for personal, educational, and research purposes;
• linking to the page of a specific photograph, author, or object — for example, in an article, a post, or a presentation;
• quoting a single photograph (not a collection) in an article, blog, or post — with attribution to the author and a link to the photograph's page on the site, to the extent customary for quoting illustrative material.

Such use does not require requesting permission, but it does require correct attribution (see below).

4. What Requires Separate Permission

Permission from the author and/or the Administration is required for:

• using one or more photographs in print publications, books, brochures, or calendars;
• any commercial use — in advertising, on merchandise, or in paid publications;
• publishing a collection of several photographs beyond quoting a single illustration;
• placing photographs in other archives, databases, or aggregator sites;
• downloading photographs in batches (manually or automatically) for subsequent use;
• using photographs as training data for neural networks or other machine-learning systems;
• any use in which a photograph is shown without attribution or a link to the source.

We do not support automated data collection from the site — this is separately addressed in the User Agreement (Section 15).

5. How to Provide Attribution

If you are using a photograph under the "What's Allowed Without Permission" section, please credit it as:

Photo: {author's name}, nalichniki.com — with a link to the photograph's page on the site.

The author's name and a link to their page appear on the photograph's own page, in the caption below the image.

6. How to Request Permission

If your intended use is not on the list of uses allowed without prior agreement, please write to us and include:

• a link (or links) to the photograph(s) you would like to use;
• where and how you plan to use them;
• the print run/reach and duration of use, where relevant.

Email: [enable JavaScript]. Copyright belongs to each photograph's author. If a photograph is not by Ivan Khafizov himself (the site's owner), only its actual author can grant permission to use it — reaching them may take some time.

7. How Photographs Are Technically Protected

Reduced-size copies of photographs shown on the site (previews and full-size viewing) carry a visible, semi-transparent ©Nalichniki.com mark. The files also carry embedded technical metadata about the author and rightsholder (EXIF/XMP), which is preserved when the file is saved even if the visible mark is not.

8. If You Notice a Violation

If you are the author of a photograph from this site and have noticed it being used elsewhere in violation of these rules, or, conversely, believe that material on the site itself infringes someone's rights, please write to us. The procedure for such requests is described in Section 14 of the User Agreement.
